6. Look, Mom! I Made a Mermaid Costume!
The dress was made by sewing together two women's formal gowns and one child's dress (the green fin). The pink dress had chiffon all the way around it, and when I ripped it from the back towards the front but left it connected in the back it resulted in this beautiful pink floof you see on the back of the costume. The blue middle is a dress flipped upside down to create the mermaid shape. The dress ended up being a little too tight in the back so I added an extension to the back by sewing a sparkly dollar store stocking onto the back as a vanity panel/extension piece. To help keep the dress up I ended up adding beaded mardi gras necklaces to the front to be used as a halter neck to keep the dress from falling down.
The jewelry was made using wire, string, paperclips, pearls, and bath toys.
The green fingerless mermaid gloves were made using the two tie straps from the child dress used for the mermaid tail fin.
Shout out to my aunt for letting me borrow her glue, glue gun, fabric, ribbon, and sewing kit! Double shout out to my godmother for immediately ordering me a sewing machine afterwards.
I also created a lady liberty costume, a skunk costume, and a Julius Caesar esque costume for a few others! I didn't get a photo of the lady liberty costume, but I promise to post an update if I ever do!
